Weed arrest in Indiana just 1.5 hr's into 2020

A traffic stop in Indiana on New Years day led to the arrest of a man for cannabis possession. At 1:30am on 1/1/2020 Indiana police pulled over a man for speeding, arrest reports state the trooper detected a "strong odor of raw marijuana emitting from the vehicle" at which point he asked the driver to exit his vehicle.


The driver Michael L. Peavy, 26, from Hammond, Indiana reportedly ignored this deputy and attempted to start his vehicle. At that point the officer opened the door of the vehicle and forceably removed Peavy. Reports state he appeared to be nervous and sweating at the time of the stop likely in fear of loosing his freedom over a plant.



Officers confiscated the 100 grams of cannabis and handgun inside Peavy's vehicle and took him into custody at Lake County Jail where he remains awaiting trial. The the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office charged him with the following

  • Possession of handgun no permit with a prior conviction- Level 5 Felony

  • Dealing marijuana – Level 6 Felony

  • Possession marijuana with prior conviction – Level 6 Felony

  • Reckless driving- Class C Misdemeanor.
