NJ Lawmakers offer compromise

Thursday the NJ senate introduces bill #S2535 which offers a compromise to the people of New Jersey in the wake of global police brutality demonstrations. The new bill states that law enforcement would no longer be able to kidnap peaceful citizens at gun point unless they are in possession of more than 1 lb of cannabis.

This new bill could reduce attests in NJ by 100 people per day.. yes, you read that correctly. According to an article published at NJ.com "Since the coronavirus outbreak began in New Jersey in early March, decriminalization efforts fell to the side. But advocates say decriminalizing marijuana is relevant to stopping as many as 100 arrests in the state a day"

The bill would also allow for record expungement with special assistance to help the victims of the drug war take the steps to have their names cleared in the eye of the law. In terms of past decriminalization bills that have been introduced facing opposition from 2 democratic representatives, Gov.Phil Murphy and Senate President Stephen Sweeney

Racial disparity hits NJ hard with the black community being 3.5 times more likely to be harassed y law enforcement over cannabis possession. The state Assembly must also take up the bill, and it must pass votes in both chambers before Murphy can sign it into law.
